US Open Women's Doubles Winners

Nathalie Dechy (L) of France and Dinara Safina of Russia celebrate with the winner's trophy after their 6-4, 6-2 win against Yung-Jan Chan and Chia-Jung Chuang of Chinese Taipei during their Women's Doubles Final match on day fourteen of the 2007 U.S. Open in Arthur Ashe Stadium at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 9, 2007 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City. There is one woman who has excelled in the doubles competition of the US Open, and that is the fabulous Martina Navratilova. She collected her first doubles crown in 1977 in partnership with Dutch tennis player, Betty Stove, and 13 long years later she claimed her final title at Flushing Meadows, together with Puerto Rican doubles star, Gigi Fernandez.

Her most successful partnership was with fellow American, Pam Shriver. Together they racked up four singles wins in New York, nearly 50% of her total wins at the US Open - she ended her career with nine woman's doubles titles at Flushing Meadows.

Martina's wins:

  • 1977 with Betty Stove
  • 1978 with Billie Jean King
  • 1980 with Billie Jean King
  • 1983, 1984, 1986 & 1987 with Pam Shriver
  • 1989 with Hana Mandlikova
  • 1990 with Gigi Fernandez

Rosie Casals and her regular playing partner, Billie Jean King, also picked up their fair share of titles. Casals won 12 Grand Slam doubles titles in her career, nine of which were woman's doubles tournaments and seven of these wins were with the help of Billie Jean King.

Casals saw fit to take on other partners too and she had a good success rate at the US Open:

  • 1967 & 1974 with Billie Jean King
  • 1971 with Judy Tegart Dalton
  • 1982 with Wendy Turnbull

Gigi Fernandez also impressed in New York. She is widely considered to be one of the most proficient doubles tennis players of all time, and in her career she won no less than 17 Grand Slam doubles titles, two Olympic gold medals and was ranked the number one woman's doubles player in the world.

The US Open women's doubles winner won 69 doubles titles during her reign, and her doubles career record stands at an imposing 664-184. She collected the US Open woman's doubles title on five occasions, her most successful partnership at Flushing Meadows was with Natalie Zvereva of Belarus.

Gigi's triumphs:

  • 1988 with Robin White
  • 1990 with Martina Navratilova
  • 1992, 1995 & 1996 with Natalie Zvereva

Another partnership worth a mention is that of Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez. They won three US Open titles in consecutive years - 2002, 2003 and 2004.
