Murray beats Nadal to reach first grand slam final
Britain's Andy Murray recorded arguably the greatest victory of his career on Sunday, defeating world number one Rafael Nadal in a rain interrupted semi-final at the 2008 US Open.
Rain halted play on Saturday with Murray two sets up, and one game down in the third set. The break in play gave Nadal an opportunity to rest and regain his composure, and the Spaniard came out firing on Sunday to win the third set and power to a 3-1 lead in the fourth.
However, Murray wasn't prepared to let the match slip away, and the Scot responded by breaking Nadal twice, taking five of the last six games to win the set and the match.
“He beat me because he was better than me," Nadal said after the match. "When he's playing aggressive, he can beat everybody."
Murray's victory makes him only the third British player in the open era to reach the final of a grand slam.
While Murray boasts a 2-1 record in confrontations with Federer, he is aware that his opponent in the final has extensive experience when it comes to weathering grand slam finals.
“He's got loads of experience in these situations, and it's something new for me," Murray said. "I know I'm going to have to play great to have a chance of winning, but I've played well the last couple of weeks."
