Serena Williams wins 9th grand slam title at US Open

Serena Williams claimed the 9th grand slam title of her career on Sunday as she defeated Jelena Jankovic in straight sets in the final of the 2008 US Open.

Williams had to play at her best to overcome a resilient Jankovic in a match the see-sawed back and forth. Jankovic squandered four opportunities to force a third set, before Williams seized the initiative, winning the final four games of the second set to power to a 6-4, 7-5 victory.

"I felt I had her. I had her, because she was really tired at the end of the second set," a disappointed Jankovic said after the final. "Who knows what would have happened if I had got into a third set? I probably would have had the upper hand. But who knows?"

Williams' victory at the 2008 US Open will see her claim the world number one ranking this week – a position she hasn't occupied since 2003.

"I feel so young and I feel so energized," Williams said of her return to the peak of womens tennis. "Sometimes, I'd wake up at 6 in the morning to go practice and it was too dark."
