Federer wins while Murray put on hold

Roger Federer progressed through to the final of the 2008 US Open by defeating Novak Djokovic on Saturday.

The world number two defeated Djokovic 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2 , and was gifted a significant advantage going into the final when the day's second semi-final between Andy Murray was suspended after three sets.

Federer now has an extra day of rest, while Murray and Nadal will have to reconvene on Sunday to conclude their match.

Murray meanwhile, will be cursing the arrival of bad weather at the US Open after surging into an early two set lead in his semi-final against world number one Rafael Nadal.

Murray put in a nearly flawless display of serving to deny Nadal break points throughout the first two sets, whilst breaking his opponent repeatedly to take a commanding lead in the match.

Nadal had pulled himself back into the match by the time the rain began to fall on Flushing Meadows, breaking Murray in the third set before play was abandoned with the score on 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 2-3.

Should Murray defeat Nadal on Sunday, he will become only the third British mens singles player in open era history to reach the final of a grand slam. No British mens singles player has won a grand slam final since the advent of the open era.
