Del Potro defeats Federer to win US Open

Juan Martin del Potro secured the first grand slam title of his career on Monday evening, defeating world number one and reigning champion, Roger Federer, in the final of the 2009 US Open.

The Argentinean came back from being 2-1 down to Federer in sets to achieve one of the biggest upsets of the open tennis era by recording a 3-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 win. The result denied Federer a 6th consecutive US Open title, and saw del Potro take his seat at tennis’s top table.

In taking the historic win, Juan Martin del Potro became the only player besides Federer and Rafael Nadal to have claimed a grand slam title in the past 5 years.

Federer did not take the loss with grace, and put on a Serena-esque display of bad behaviour when the Argentinean took longer than normal to challenge a line call. The Swiss swore at the umpire, and implied that different standards were being applied to the two players.

"It's too early to explain," del Potro said when asked to describe his feelings on taking the win. "Maybe tomorrow, maybe next week I will be believing this. But now, I don't know. I don't understand nothing."
