Men's Singles

Roger Federer was fittingly watched by another sporting superstar as he outwitted and outgunned Andy Roddick to claim his third successive US Open title. Golfing legend Tiger Woods was invited by Federer to attend the final, and was not disappointed by the world number one's dominance on court.

The Swiss genius beat the hard-hitting Roddick, 6-2 4-6 7-5 6-1, to claim his third major title of the year and his 9^th career Grand Slam. He out-aced Roddick by 17-7 and made only 19 unforced errors to claim the victory. He is now the first man since Ivan Lendl in 1985-87 to win three consecutive US Open titles.

Even tennis legend Martina Navratilova was left breathless at the Federer performance: "The way Roger plays the game is phenomenal," she said. 'He's just a genius with the racket."

Women's Singles

Russian beauty, Maria Sharapova proved her pedigree yet again when she claimed her second Grand Slam title of her career by trouncing Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium, 6-4 6-4.

The 19-year-old was absolutely thrilled with her Flushing Meadows crown - "I'm so happy it's here in New York in my favourite city in the world," said Sharapova, the 2006 US Open winner. In 2004 she won the ladies' singles event at Wimbledon.

Although Sharapova played with skill and grace, Henin-Hardenne did not look match fit. She has only played one tournament since Wimbledon due to injury, and although she claimed the French Open title, she has lost in all the other three Grand Slam finals.

Men's Doubles

Thirty-three year-old Leander Paes came back from a five-year drought to claim a shock victory at the US Open men's doubles event. He and Czech Republic partner, Martin Damm subdued the second seed Jonas Bjorkman and Max Mirnyi in three sets, 6-7(5-7) 6-4 6-3.

Paes last won a Grand Slam title at the 2001 French Open, and for his partner it was the first taste of the big time. The duo pocketed $400 000 for their efforts.

Women's Doubles

Unseeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia and Natalie Dechy of France defeated Katarina Svebotnik of Slovenia and Dinara Safina of Russia in two sets, 7-6(5) 7-5.

Mixed Doubles

Tennis superstar Martina Navratilova ended her professional career with a final Grand Slam mixed doubles title at the US Open. The indomitable Navratilova has won 167 singles championships and 176 doubles titles in her 33-year career.

Just one-month short of her 50th birthday Navratilova showed her prowess and together with partner Bob Bryan crushed the ill-fated duo of Kveta Peschke and Martin Damm, 6-2 6-3.
