Women's Singles

Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia kisses the trophy after defeating Elena Dementieva of Russia in the women's final during the US Open September 11, 2004 at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York.In an all-Russian final, 19-year-old Svetlana Kuznetsova beat her compatriot and friend, Elena Dementieva in straight sets, 6-3 7-5, to claim her first Grand Slam singles title.

Kuznetsova became the third Russian to claim a Grand Slam crown in 2004. Ana Myskina won the French Open and Maria Sharapova lifted the ladies singles title at the Wimbledon championships.

Dementieva was preferred to take the title as she had impressed with three-set victories over Amelie Mauresmo and local favourite Jennifer Capriati en route to the final showdown, but she failed to produce the goods against the eventual 2004 US Open champion.

"I wasn't able to play my best tennis today," said Dementieva. "But Svetlana played a great game and deserved to win. It's been a great tournament for me. I played some good tennis and I am not that disappointed. She just played better than me."
