2003 US Open Tennis Results
Men's Singles
American Andy Roddick thrashed Spaniard Juan Carlo Ferrero to claim his first career Grand Slam title. The 21-year-old Roddick put on a fiery display, and out served
his opponent to win the match, 6-3 7-6 6-3, in only one hour and 42 minutes.
The home boy was the out-and-out favourite as he headed towards Flushing Meadows with 18 straight victories under his belt. The tearful Roddick celebrated his win in fine style with his coach, Brad Gilbert after the match.
"I knew I was going to cry," said Roddick. "I was just so happy and wanted to share the moment with everyone who has supported me. I have my friends and my family here; everyone I know is here supporting me and I couldn't have a better day."
Women's Singles
Justine Henin-Hardenne emulated her French Open victory in May with a surprisingly comfortable
win over the world's number one and top seed of the tournament, fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters.
Although Henin-Hardenne played relatively well to claim her second Grand Slam title of the year, it was Clijsters who failed to put her game together - she made 40 unforced errors and double faulted four times in the 7-5 6-1 whitewash.
Men's Doubles
Todd Woodbridge and Jonas Bjorkman managed to subdue American twins, Bob and Mike Bryan at Flushing Meadows to claim the US Open men's doubles title.
The Woodbridge/Bjorkman duo had to work hard for their 2003 US Open tennis result and rallied to claim the US$400 000 purse with a three-set win, 5-7 6-0 7-5. It was Woodbridge's 77th doubles title and he is now level with John McEnroe on the all-time list.
Women's Doubles
Virginia Ruano-Pascual and Paola Suarez denied Martina Navratilova her 59th Grand Slam title. The legendary Czech-born star would have been the oldest woman to win a US Open title had she and partner, Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova, been victorious.
Although the duo gave it their all, Navratilova was not able to add to her 171 doubles titles. The second-seeded Spanish/Argentine pairing claimed the title in straight sets, 6-2 6-3
Mixed Doubles
Katarina Srebotnik and Bob Bryan took the mixed doubles title at Flushing Meadows, New York when they tamed Lina Krasnovoutskaya and Daniel Nestor in three sets, 5-7 7-5 7-6 (7-5).
