2002 US Open Tennis Title Holders
Men's Singles
'Pistol' Pete Sampras claimed his 14th Grand Slam title at the US Open when he defeated Andre Agassi in four sets, 6-3 6-4 5-7 6-4, breaking a two-year championship drought.
Many had urged Sampras to retire after two very mediocre seasons, but the champion refused to bow out and silenced his critics with arguably his best ever win at a Grand Slam.
He lifted his last singles Grand Slam crown at the All England Club in 2000, and the current season has seen a huge slump in the world rankings for the former number one.
"All I could do after Wimbledon was start working again, get back to the drawing board and start doing the running and the practicing. And it paid off this week," he said.
Women's Singles
The number one seed, Serena Williams put up a devastatingly powerful display to overwhelm her sister, and defending champion, Venus Williams in straight sets, 6-4 6-3.
In a packed Arthur Ashe Stadium, the two American sisters battled it out for the coveted US Open singles crown in a hard-fought encounter.
"I did make a lot of errors and that makes it tough to win the match - I think Serena was the best player in the tournament this year," said elder sister, Venus.
Men's Doubles
The newly formed partnership of Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirnyi powered their way to their first doubles success at a major championship when they defeated Jiri Novak and Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic, 6-3 3-6 6-4, to become the 2002 US Open tennis title holders.
Bhupathi ended his long standing partnership with Leander Paes and joined up with Mirnyi of Belarus in April. "I have to thank Max. He had a tough week playing in the singles and doubles but he stuck it out with me," said an elated Bhupathi.
Women's Doubles
Second seeds Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez destroyed Russia's Elena Dementieva and Slovakia's Janette Husarova to claim the women's doubles title at the US Open.
It was the duo's second Grand Slam success of the year - they had earlier claimed the French Open crown. The champions took only 64 minutes to complete a 6-2 6-1 whitewash.
Mixed Doubles
American Mike Bryan taught his twin brother a lesson when he claimed the mixed doubles title at the US Open, together with partner Lisa Raymond.
The number two seeds defeated Bob Bryan and partner, Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia, in a closely contested match, 7-6 7-6. It was Mike's first Grand Slam victory, and he felt he owed it to his brother for hooking him up with the experienced Raymond.
"My brother signed me up with her. He was over here and I guess just fishing around for partners. He grabbed Lisa for me. I was so happy," said Mike.
