Men's Singles

Budding Russian superstar, Marat Safin crushed the awesomely talented Pete Sampras in straight sets to claim his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in New York.

The 19-year-old Safin became the youngest US Open champion since Pete Sampras defeated the famed Andre Agassi in 1990.

Safin totally dominated the Wimbledon champion, thrashing him 6-4 6-3 6-3 in just over one hour and 38 minutes. It was only Sampras' third defeat in 16 Grand Slam finals!

After his win, an overwhelmed Safin said: "Never in my life have I played better. I don't really remember it. I only remember the last game."

Women's Singles

Venus Williams beat compatriot Lindsay Davenport in straight sets, 6-4 7-5, to clinch the US Open women's singles title and claim her second Grand Slam victory.

In a re-run of the Wimbledon final, Williams was too tough, both mentally and physically for the experienced Davenport. She now takes over as reigning champion from younger sister, Serena and has gone 26 matches unbeaten.

After holding her trophy aloft, with the trademark grin on her face, Williams said: "I really have some wheels - I'm really speedy these days. It helped me out a lot."

Men's Doubles

Lleyton Hewitt and partner, Max Mirnyi clinched the men's doubles title at the US Open becoming the first unseeded duo in the history of the event to claim the title.

The 2000 US Open tennis winners defeated South African Ellis Ferreira and Rich Leach of America in three sets, 6-4 5-7 7-6, in a match which lasted just over one hour and 55 minutes.

"It's been an unbelievable week. It's a fantastic win. I'd like to thanks to Max for playing with me," said 19-year-old Hewitt, who became the youngest man in the modern era to win a Grand Slam doubles title.

Women's Doubles

Japan's Ai Sugiyama and Julie Halard-Decugis will climb to the top of the doubles rankings with their three set win over the number 10 seeds, Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Elena Likhovtseva of Russia.

Halard-Decugis celebrated her 30th birthday with the 6-0 1-6 6-1 victory which took just over one hour and 19 minutes.

"We deserved it, it's really great," Sugiyama said. "I was under pressure because I knew it was Julie's birthday and I wanted to do well."

Mixed Doubles

Spain's Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and first-time playing partner, Jared Palmer lifted the mixed doubles title at the US Open in New York.

They beat the fourth seeds Anna Kournikova of Russia and Max Mirnyi of Belarus in straight sets, 6-4 6-3. The number two seeds walked away with $126 000 in prize money.
